In the words of Billie, ‘I could eat that girl for lunch’

TextTiarna Meehan

“I feel like as a society we have entered the lesbianest timeline,” writesone user on X. With Love Lies Bleeding hitting cinemas, La Camionera opening, and JoJo Siwa’s unavoidable presence on the feed, it’s hard to deny the rising wave of lesbian visibility across pop culture. The same goes for pop music, with some of the biggest female stars embracing the sapphic wave – from Charli XCX to Lana Del Rey and beyond.

The latest addition to the movement – yes, we’re calling it that – is Billie Eilish’s latest track “Lunch” off her third studio album, Hit Me Hard and Soft, which dropped last Friday, with lyrics like –I could eat that girl for lunch / Yeah, she dances on my tongue / Tastes like she might be the one”.

The singer teased the track last month at a Coachella party she hosted, sparking anticipation across the queer internet. This sapphic anthem follows Eilish’s candid comments in an interview where she confessed, “I’ve been in love with girls for my whole life, but I just didn’t understand – until, last year, I realised I wanted my face in a vagin*.” We get it, Billie.

The oral sex music scene has been, for lack of better words, dry – until very recently. Since society has progressed way past the need for songs about giving blowj*bs, it’s about time the pop girlies gave us some tracks about eating out (extra points if they’re gay). While some revolve around cute metaphors – summer fruits, sticky lip gloss, and sweet cola – others are boldly and unapologetically descriptive.

While queer youth once grew up on tracks like Hayley Kiyoko's “Girls Like Girls”,this new generation will have a whole host of female pleasure-oriented tracks to choose from. By embracing these themes, pop music can play a significant role in promoting a more realistic portrayal of sexuality, breaking down taboos surrounding female desire and queer love. Celebrating the release of “Lunch” as the latest in a legacy of canonical songs celebrating the art of eating out, here’s seven more of them.

CHARLI XCX FT CUPCAKKE, ‘LIPGLOSS’

Charli XCX’s 2017 release “Lipgloss”, featuring CupcakKe, is a track loaded with double entendres and metaphors. CupcakKe’s verse, where she equates her puss* to the slimy texture of an egg, is a particular standout – “A puss* gooey like yolk before the egg scrambled”. Big on female pleasure, small on subtlety. Featuring stellar production from SOPHIE and A.G. Cook, it’s one to get stuck into.

LANA DEL REY, ‘COLA’

Making the cut due to arguably the best opening lyric of all time – “My puss* tastes like Pepsi Cola”. And whether you like it or not, Lana is a queer icon. A snippet of a demo version of the 2012 track titled “puss*” leaked prior to the release of her third album Paradise, but Lana added some nuance to the track title before release, going on to explain that the line came from something one of her ex-boyfriends had once said.

ICE SPICE, ‘MUNCH (FEELIN’ U)’

Recorded in her bedroom in just an hour, this is the track that catapalted Ice Spice to stardom in 2023, going viral on TikTok, and earning her the title of the people’s princess. In her own words, “munches are eaters”. The song sparked a trend of girl’s on TikTok showing off their munch-identifying significant others, which is a definite plus for representation. Certified munchers, rise up.

CHAPPELL ROAN, ‘CASUAL’

Head from a girl who hates you.Dismantling the frustrating logic of a partner who insists on no commitment, this 2023 track catalysed the Missouri-born cowgirl pop star into success, with lyrics such as, “Knee deep in the passenger seat and you’re eating me out/Is it casual now?” racy enough to get lesbians on TikTok running to their Subarus to work out the logistics of it all.

HARRY STYLES, ‘WATERMELON SUGAR’

Getting older is realising this track is not about watermelon. Heavy on the summer fruits metaphors, yes, but the music video alone earns the track its place in the rankings, with Styles playing erotically with a watermelon slice. Dare we say it’s the Call Me By Your Name peach scene but the bisexual edition?

JANELLE MONÁE FT GRIMES, ‘PYNK’

The track from her third studio album, Dirty Computer (2018), is a sapphic classic in collaboration with Grimes. Rife with innuendos, the pair roll out a list of instances that relate to the colour pink – and if the single cover art is any, erm, indication, you can see where this is going.Filmed in a desert, Monáe sports what became known as “vagin* pants”, designed by Duran Lantink. She describes the video as a “brash celebration of creation, self-love, sexuality, and puss* power”. The holy trinity.

ASHNIKKO FT PRINCESS NOKIA, ‘SLUMBER PARTY’

Hot yet scientifically accurate. The collaboration from Ashnikko and New York rapper, Princess Nokia, is a fantasy track that puts cunniling*s on the map. Playing with the stereotype of a sapphic sleepover, the track earned praise for its proudly queer exploration of oral sex. An instant classic.
