Chief of Musculoskeletal Oncology Surgery

Physician Spotlight

Juan Pretell, M.D., is a musculoskeletal oncology surgeon and the chief of musculoskeletal oncology surgery at Miami Cancer Institute. Dr. Pretell specializes in benign and malignant musculoskeletal tumors and skin cancers affecting the musculoskeletal system. He is fluent in English and Spanish.

Prior to joining Miami Cancer Institute in 2022, Dr. Pretell worked at University of Miami where he was an Associate Professor of Orthopedic and Faculty of the Orthopedic Surgery residency program and Musculoskeletal Oncology Fellowship. He also was the director of clinical research in the Division of Musculoskeletal Oncology Surgery.

Dr. Pretell’s research has been published in high-impact national and international orthopedic and oncology journals. He has been a speaker in national and international meetings, and faculty for international Musculoskeletal Oncology courses. He is an active member of the Musculoskeletal Tumor Society and fellow of the AAOS. He is also a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthopedic Surgeons.

Dr. Pretell’s approach to patient care is to view patients and their families as his own family members. He is honest and open about the diagnosis and the treatment options available with the most current, evidence-based medicine. When he is not treating patients, Dr. Pretell enjoys going to arcades, cooking classes and entertainment activities with his oldest stepson and his triplets, watching movies with his oldest daughter, traveling and taking beach walks with his wife. He is also an avid World Cup soccer fan.

Baptist Health Miami Cancer Institute received High-Performing designations in colon cancer surgery; leukemia, lymphoma, and myeloma; lung cancer surgery; and prostate cancer surgery. The Eugene M. & Christine E. Lynn Cancer Institute, part of Baptist Health, at Boca Raton Regional Hospital, also received the High Performing designation for colon cancer surgery. Additionally, Baptist Health Miami Neuroscience Institute, which has neurosurgeons with dual appointments at Miami Cancer Institute, is now ranked among the top neurology and neurosurgery programs in the country.
