Tesla Matrix Headlight Support Arrives in the U.S. and Canada With Update 2024.20 (2024)

Tesla has been on a roll with updates recently, and now update 2024.20 was released to employees over the weekend. This update builds on the many features in the Spring Update and adds a few big improvements.

Update: Matrix Support in the US & Canada

Tesla recently tweeted that update 2024.20 is now rolling out to vehicles - and they included some surprises in this tweet. This update includes Adaptive Headlights for the United States and Canada! North America will receive matrix headlight support, including the curve adaption feature discussed below. South Korea and Puerto Rico will also gain the feature.

However, Europe and possibly other regions also receive an additional matrix headlight feature — the ability to illuminate further on highways.

Tesla also shed some light on what’s included in the hot weather improvements. All Model 3s and Ys, as well as refresh Model S and X’s will now cool down faster in hot temperatures. They will also better regulate high-voltage battery temperature for improved Supercharging performance. The Cybertruck in particular will also benefit from a quieter AC.

Adaptive Headlights

New updates to Adaptive Headlights are arriving for European cars with matrix headlights. The new update allows the headlights to adapt to curves in the road ahead of you, enabling better illumination. Having the adaptive headlights work for curves is the second major update for matrix headlights. Update 2024.8 added adaptive high-beam support, letting your high beams stay on longer by turning off select LEDs in the headlights.

Update 2024.2 first brought adaptive high beams to the new Model 3, before it was later introduced to older vehicles with matrix headlights. At this time, it’s not clear whether the improvements to headlights around curves will be exclusive to matrix headlights or also support the new Model 3.

How to Tell If You Have Matrix Headlights

How do you know if you have matrix headlights on your Tesla? On the outer edge of the headlight, there will be a large, round projector dome, like in the image below. If there isn’t a dome, those are standard non-matrix headlights.
Another way to tell is to run a stock light show while facing a wall. If the Tesla logo, in letters, pops up, you have matrix headlights.

For now, North America still does not have adaptive headlight support, mostly due to legislative and testing issues in the United States. The US recently approved adaptive headlights, and a Tesla employee mentioned they’re working on it. Canada has legalized adaptive headlights since 2018, so we see this deployed in North America at some point in the future.

Supercharger Races on Beach Buggy Racing 2

Tesla is still improving its Arcade functionality, with the addition of local leaderboards at Superchargers in Beach Buggy Racing 2. It appears that each individual Supercharger site will have its own leaderboard, which drivers can compete on while their cars charge. Tesla says there will also be special races to compete in this Beach Buggy Racing 2 update.

Tesla owners can plug in and play with a controller, the touchscreen, or their vehicle’s steering wheel. Thanks to steer-by-wire on the Cybertruck, the actual wheels on the truck won’t move like they do on other Tesla models when playing the game.

We continue to hope that future refreshes to the S, 3, X, and Y will eventually receive steer-by-wire as well, as the feature has quite a few unique uses, whether driving or parked.

Autopilot Strikes and Suspension

An updated Autopilot Strike system, similar to the one that is on Tesla’s upcoming FSD V12.4 update, is on 2024.20 as well. At five strikes, users will be suspended from the use of Autopilot like before, but now Tesla will remove a strike for each 7-day period the driver goes without receiving a strike.

FSD 12.4 also improves vision-based monitoring and removes the steering wheel nag, but that’s not in this latest Tesla update, but will likely be added in the future.

Tesla tends to release new Autopilot features in their FSD updates before releasing them to the wider public for regular Autopilot use.

Hot Weather Improvements

The last set of user-end improvements coming in 2024.20 will be related to hot weather, the opposite of 2024.2.6’s cold weather update. This set of changes intends to improve AUTO mode HVAC performance in hot weather, helping to cool down the cabin faster, while also maintaining comfort at lower noise levels.

There have been several updates in the last six months to Tesla’s HVAC systems, all helping to deliver a quieter, more comfortable experience, with one of the last major ones introducing cool-down or warm-up periods before blowing air into the car cabin.

Teslas have had games through Tesla Arcade for many years, but now thanks to Google’s new initiative, they just gained access to 75 new, full-screen titles. YouTube Playables lets you enjoy games using just a web browser, whether it’s on your phone, computer, or in your vehicle.

YouTube’s new Playables include fairly popular mobile game adaptions, including classics like Cut the Rope, Chess, Daily Crossword, Element Blocks, and others.

How to Access Playables

The easiest way to access the new games in your car is to open up the YouTube app in Tesla Theater. YouTube is requiring users to sign in to use Playables. Once you’re signed in, you can navigate to Playables or open search, and type “Youtube Playables.” The list of Playables will appear as a horizontal bar. On the right side of the bar, a “See All” button will appear.

There are currently more than 75 games on YouTube Playables, and YouTube intends to add more as time goes on.

Full Screen or Windowed Play

Thanks to Tesla opening up YouTube in a full-screen window, you can enjoy games full-screen, just like Tesla’s other Arcade titles. However, you can also play the games in a smaller windowed version by tapping the icon on the top-left corner. This is useful if you want to access other vehicle controls such as climate as well.

Game Compatibility

YouTube Playables works on Intel and AMD vehicles, and since they just use the browser, they don’t require a download. On Intel-based cars, there’s a noticeable lag in some games, but most games are still enjoyable and playable on the older MCU. While the loading experience is fine on AMD vehicles, it is fairly slow on Intel vehicles. All games use the vehicle’s touchscreen and don’t currently support controllers, however, these are adapted mobile games which rely on having a touchscreen device.

Future of Games on Tesla

With Tesla recently removing Steam from newer vehicles, and now with YouTube’s announcement of 75+ browser-based games, it seems that Tesla’s game ambitions may change. While YouTube Playables can’t compare to the titles that were available on Steam, most users don’t need to play Triple-A titles in their car. If they choose to load up a game, it’s mostly to pass a little bit of time.

Now that Teslas have access to almost a hundred games on top of what Tesla already offers, we may see Tesla’s efforts change since the casual gaming need is already being fulfilled by someone else. Tesla may instead choose to pour time and resources into other Tesla features or provide a unique gaming experience like they’re doing with the addition to Beach Buggy Racing - Supercharger Races. This special edition of the game lets you set the fastest lap at your local Supercharger and climb up your Supercharger’s leaderboard.

Changing your Tesla’s color – whether through PPF/Vinyl or Paint, is a definite possibility. But how do you show those colors throughout the car’s software? Easy! Tesla’s Colorizer feature offers the ability to adjust the vehicle’s color in software.

You can even change what kind of wheels appear in the visualizations – a quick and easy way to match whatever you have on the car – as long as it’s a first-party wheel.

Where to Find the Colorizer

There are two ways to access Tesla’s Colorizer feature. You can go to the ToyBox app and choose Colorizer, or you can go to Controls > Software and tap on the colored square underneath your vehicle. Keep in mind this feature can only be accessed while the vehicle is parked.

Once enabled, you’ll be presented with the vehicle color wheel and menu – which offers a set of options to cater to your preferences. We’ll tackle some of those options a bit further down.

Where the Colorizer Feature Applies

So where do these colorizer changes apply? All throughout the vehicle, and in unexpected places too! It will display the chosen color directly in the visualization, both when parked and moving. These changes will also appear throughout settings and different parts of the car, including the mobile app, and even the Beach Buggy Racing game.

Keep in mind that the Colorizer is only available on Intel or AMD-based vehicles (MCU2+) vehicles – which means legacy vehicles won’t be able to benefit from these software color changes.

Colorizer Settings

The colorizer primarily offers a color wheel for easy selection of whatever hue you’d like to go with – whether for the day, or for longer. It also offers two other options – paint style, and trim style.

The three paint styles – Solid, Matte, and Metallic – are similar to regular car paints. The solid paint style is a flat color that matches most of Tesla’s paint offerings. The matte paint style is a bit smoother, and metallic is much more reflective. In our testing, matte often looks the best on screen.

Tesla also gives you two trim color options. Most legacy vehicles nowadays have chrome trims – and if you’d like to match that or you prefer chrome – you can also choose a chrome trim. Most modern vehicles have black – and it is selected by default.

Saving and Removing Presets

The Colorizer also offers you the ability to save presets – and to switch back to your car’s default paint – whatever it shipped with from the factory. The factory preset is located on the bottom right and quickly swaps the color back to the factory option if you can’t find one you’d like.

You can create new presets after deciding on a new color and pressing the plus box on the bottom left corner of the menu. This will add a new preset to the right of the plus icon. If you want to delete a preset, tap and hold on one, and an X will pop up – allowing you to delete that preset.

Changing Wheels in Software

You can also change your Tesla’s wheels from the car. Everywhere the Colorizer applies – these same changes apply.

You can access this by going to Settings (the grey vehicle icon), and then going down to the Service Menu. From there, select the Wheel and Tire sub-option on the right. You’ll be presented with a list of options.

However, keep in mind that selecting wheel options that do not match your current wheel size will impact your vehicle. Tesla provides a warning in this menu to not mismatch the wheel sizes – as it will impact range estimates and the vehicle’s speed display.
